Silicon carbide sanding belts are the gold standard when it comes to grinding, sanding and polishing non-ferrous metals (brass/bronze), ceramics and hard woods. Their closed coat provides optimal grain coverage for optimal finishing results.

These sanding belts are both sharp and friable, making them suitable for light pressure applications that require consistent scratch patterns. This sanding belt type works particularly well to remove floor coatings such as glue, urethane and epoxy.

Best for Metal

Aluminum oxide works well for general sanding applications but doesn’t fare so well with hard metals like steel. Silicon carbide is often chosen in these cases because of its sharp edges and quick cutting speed; due to this factor alone it offers greater durability than other abrasives grains on the market.

Silicon carbide sanding belts are great tools for finishing metal projects, from painting coats between applications of paint or stripping away rust and corrosion, to prepping auto bodies before painting. Ceramic sanding belts are specifically designed to handle hard and soft metals like stainless steel and Iconel with ease, offering greater durability than aluminum oxide sanding belts and less heating up when working with harder materials. These belts are an ideal solution for rough sanding hard and soft metals as well as fine surface finishing, such as between coats sanding before painting on wood surfaces. Furthermore, these belts are often employed in lapidary applications. These premium, heavy X-weight tear resistant belts have a premium tear resistant backing and are resin bonded directly onto their abrasives for greater heat resistance and longer lifespan. Available in several grit options for portable tools, bench stand grinders and backstand belt sanders.

Best for Wood

If you’re sanding wood, selecting an appropriate abrasive is key to success. There are four primary abrasive grains; each offers unique advantages when it comes to preparation jobs or metal sanding.

Silicon carbide abrasives are highly sharp abrasives with needle-like cutting surfaces that break apart quickly, revealing fresh cutting edges – ideal for woodworking applications. Unfortunately, they’re more friable than aluminum oxide, meaning they wear down faster in high pressure situations, meaning it might not be ideal for metal sanding applications as other abrasives would be.

Our Premium Sanding Belts are constructed with premium-grade aluminum oxide material for optimal wood and metal sanding applications. Their abrasive particles are attached to heavy-duty cloth backing for wet or dry use and feature full resin on resin bonds for increased abrasive life. Bi-directional for maximum efficiency.

These abrasive grits are designed to cut quickly, leaving behind a smooth finish. Their extra heavy X-weight cloth backing provides additional durability against unwanted scratches and tear resistance – ideal for wood floor sanding applications where glue, urethane or epoxy must be removed quickly and effectively. Ideally used with drum and orbital sanders. This 4×36 belt works equally well in concrete applications where adhesive, urethane and epoxy must be removed.

These aluminum oxide abrasive grits work quickly and leave an even finish, making them the ideal choice for concrete, wood and metal sanding applications. Their material is attached to a heavy-duty water proof cloth back with butt spliced edges for smooth operation – they even work well in wet sanding applications! Aluminum oxide can cause serious surface damage on steel however; diamond is far better at dealing with this metal than aluminum oxide can due to being less sharp/hard and lasting longer!

Best for Stone

Silicon carbide is an excellent choice for stoneworking applications. With its extremely sharp edge, silicon carbide can cut through metals such as aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, bronze and certain nonferrous alloys as well as concrete, glass and stone surfaces. Because its edge is so sharp it also serves well for removing paint, sanding between coats of paint or knife scale finishing/lapidary applications; but because its lifespan is shorter it should be replaced more frequently than with other abrasive materials.

Silicon carbide abrasive belts come in both closed-coat and open-coat variations. Closed-coat belts feature grains covering 90 to 95% of their surfaces for perfect grinding on hard metals; open-coat versions feature grains covering 60-66%, making them suitable for soft wood or metal surfaces, as well as being waterproof for wet sanding applications.

To select an abrasive grain, consider its grit size. Grit size refers to the number of particles per inch that will wear away when you sand something; higher numbers indicate finer particles and vice versa.

Care should also be given to the color of your belt, which can provide clues as to what kind of abrasive material it contains. Aluminum oxide comes in white while silicon carbide comes in black; there are also gray and pink options that offer less versatility than these two materials.

Most people opt to begin with an aluminum oxide sanding belt before switching to silicon carbide belt for final sanding, in order to achieve a smoother finish with reduced heat. Aluminum oxide belts tend to be more durable than silicon carbides; as a result, they can often be used for general applications; however due to risk of heating or sanding fingers on hard metals blade backs and bevels may need different treatment.

Best for Paint

Silicon carbide abrasive grains offer high sharpness, high strength, yet friable wear surfaces which break down rapidly to expose sharp cutting edges.
